Protecting Your Face in a Car Accident

According to a new study, research has found that safety tools, such as seat belts and airbags can be crucial for minimize the risk of a facial fracture after a car accident. This study took place at the University of Wisconsin and showed that the use of an airbag reduced the chances of a facial fracture occurring by 18 percent and using a seat belt reduced this risk by 43 percent. When both of these safety features are used together, the chance of a serious facial fraction was reduced by more than 50 percent.

To determine these facts, the managers of the research report evaluated data from the years of 2007 to 2012 and considered the cases of over 518,000 people who went to a trauma center after being involved in a car accident. Over 56,000 of those people (about 10 percent) suffered a facial fracture, with nasal and mid-face fractures being the most common.

Who is Most Vulnerable to Facial Injuries?

Those who were most likely to suffer this type of accident were the ones who didn’t have the safety tools of seat belts or airbags in their vehicle. For those who did suffer some type of facial fracture after a car accident, approximately three out of five had no type of safety device to use.
