Are Florida Drivers Really Using Their Cell Phones While Driving?

It’s common to pull up to another car on the Florida roadways to see the other driver talking on his or her cell phone. Maybe you are one of these drivers. You will be surprised to learn how many people are guilty of talking on a cell phone while driving.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently surveyed 1,219 drivers, 18 and older, regarding their driving and cell phone habits. The results were alarming.

The survey showed that approximately 40 percent of drivers admitted to talking on their phones a few times each week. Nineteen percent said that they drive and talk daily. Fortunately, thirty-five percent of drivers said they never talk and drive.

So, what does this information mean? Keeping in mind that each driver spends an average of one hour a day behind the wheel and approximately 4 minutes of this time is used to talk on the phone, it means that approximately 7 percent of drive time involves a distraction.

This fact becomes even more concerning when you take into account that drivers sometimes take their eyes off the road to either answer the phone or call someone. This driving behavior can put you and your family at a greater risk of being involved in a serious Florida auto accident.
