As the weather warms up, more and more people decide to take a joy ride on their motorcycles. While motorcycle riding is a fun thing to do, it is also dangerous if you don’t take certain safety precautions. Follow these safety tips to ensure your Florida motorcycle ride really is joyful.
- Always wear a helmet. Helmets are one of the most important pieces of protective gear you can wear. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), helmets are estimated to be 37% effective in preventing fatal injuries to motorcycle riders.
- Do not speed. Nearly 35% of all motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes are proven to have been speeding.
- Do not drink and drive. Not only is it extremely dangerous, it is also illegal. Approximately 30% of all fatally injured motorcycle riders have BAC levels of .08 g/dL or higher. Also, nearly 43% of motorcyclists who die in single vehicle crashes have BAC levels of .08 g/dL or higher.
- Drive defensively. 47% of all motorcycles involved in fatal crashes collide with another vehicle. Do not tailgate or allow anyone else to follow you too closely.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Do not ride in cars’ blind spots. Watch for other vehicles and pedestrians at intersections. Also be aware of other vehicles that may be turning left as you are passing.
- Obtain a valid motorcycle operator’s license. One out of every four motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes do not have a valid license. Maintaining a valid license ensures you continue your motorcycle safety education so that you may protect yourself on the road.
