How Low Can I Go? Actos May Cause Dangerously Low Blood Sugar Levels in Florida

Diabetics don’t need to be told about the dangers of low blood sugar. If you’ve been diagnosed with type-2 diabetes in Florida, you’ve likely experienced the dizziness, disorientation and helplessness of a hyperglycemic attack-but if you’re taking Actos, you might be more likely to experience it again.

Among Actos’ many side effects is its ability to cause low levels of blood sugar. Not surprising, since the drug is marketed as a blood glucose reducer-but it may drop blood sugar levels far more than is healthy for a diabetic.

Patients who are most at risk of hypoglycemia when taking Actos in Palm Beach are:

  • Insulin-dependent. Takeda Pharmaceutical’s own clinical trials revealed the possibility of their drug working a little too well, reporting that using insulin with Actos can cause severely low glucose levels (although they suggest cutting back on the amount of insulin rather than discontinuing Actos use).
  • Inconsistent testers. Since blood glucose must be monitored rigorously when taking Actos, those who miss even a single test could suffer hypoglycemic symptoms.
  • Heavily medicated. Actos has a tendency to interact with other medications. Your doctor should make a list of all the medications you are taking and check for possible interactions before prescribing Actos.
  • Inconstant eaters. Skipping meals or going too long without eating is a terrible pattern for diabetics. Always eat regular meals, testing before and after to ensure glucose levels stay constant.
  • Heavy exercisers. Burning calories is burning glycogen. Always rehydrate and eat after an exercise session, taking care to test and replace your sugar.
  • Lifestyle addicts. Unhealthy levels of stress or are dependent on alcohol or other depressants can have a profound effect on glucose levels.
  • The unprepared. Diabetics should always pack snacks or glycogen tablets on them at all times, just in case they are away from sugar sources in an emergency.

As trusted Palm Beach personal injury attorneys, we know that many diabetics have been living with their condition for years. While you can probably already spot the early warning signs of low blood sugar, an unchecked case can be fatal when using Actos-so you should seek immediate medical treatment if you experience any of the following:

  • Extreme thirst or hunger
  • Cold sweats
  • Tingling in the hands and feet
  • Dizziness and shaking
  • Heart palpitations
  • Blurred vision
  • Irritability, confusion, or other changes in behavior
  • Loss of coordination or muscle control
  • Trouble speaking or concentrating
  • Fainting or blackouts
  • Seizures
