Florida Car Crash Involving Stolen Car and Bank Fraud Leaves Five Dead

On July 8, five people, fleeing a bank in a stolen car, were killed in a fiery Florida car crash near Zoo Miami.

At approximately 12:45 p.m., police were notified of fraudulent activity at a Miami-Dade bank near 137th Avenue and Southwest 152nd Street. When an officer attempted to stop a silver Infiniti that was driving away from the bank, it immediately made a U-turn and fled at a high rate of speed.

The officer lost sight of the Infiniti and radioed in the car's description and last known direction of travel.

Unfortunately, it did not take long for the authorities to catch up with the it.

As the car sped down 152nd Street, it ran a red light at 119th Avenue, crashed through a fence, hit a tree, and burst into flames.

The Miami-Dade police and fire rescue attempted to save the occupants in the car, but were unsuccessful. Four occupants had already perished when the Miami-Dade police and fire rescue arrived. The legs of the last occupant were trapped inside the vehicle, preventing rescuers from freeing her. Surgeons from the Ryder Trauma Center were called in to attempt a field amputation, but the victim died before the surgeons arrived.

The occupants, who appear to have been four men and one woman, all perished at the scene. Due to the severity of the burns, the bodies have not yet been identified.

The wreck is still under investigation. Investigators have not stated what kind of bank fraud was committed, nor at which bank the alleged fraud occurred.

Palm Beach County Traffic Deaths Decrease Significantly

The numbers in a recently released study are uplifting. The number of Palm Beach car accidents that result in death decreased nearly 30 percent from 2008 to 2009.

According to a report issued by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and the Florida Department of Transportation, traffic fatalities in Palm Beach County dropped from 198 in 2008 to 151 in 2009.

Police are attributing the decrease to increased enforcement efforts and educational safety talks.

The decline in deaths is being seen not only in Palm Beach County, but throughout the entire state of Florida. The study also noted that Florida teen car crash deaths and Florida motorcycle crash deaths have seen a steep decline.

Motorcycle deaths, which have been rising steadily since 1996, declined statewide by 24 percent in 2009. It is believed that the decline may be attributed to a 2008 law, which requires a training course for anyone wishing to obtain a motorcycle license.

Elderly Boca Raton Couple Killed in Deadly West Palm Beach Car Crash

An elderly couple suffered fatal injuries when the car they were riding in was involved in a deadly Palm Beach car crash.  

A little before 7 a.m. on June 26, Lunda Boliere was driving her 2004 Toyota Avalon north on I-95. Boliere, who was the caregiver for passengers Diana S. Einhorn, 78, and Sidney Norman Einhorn, 81, was driving the Einhorns, their granddaughter Naomi Graham, 12, of Warr Acres OK, and Naomi’s mother Elise Sharon Graham, 52, also of Warr Acres to Palm Beach International Airport.

As Boliere was driving, she was cut off by an unknown car. Boliere lost control of the vehicle, and crossed from the middle lane over to the entrance ramp to 10th Avenue North. The car then vaulted over the ramp, struck the adjacent concrete wall, and flew into the air before it came to rest on its roof on the grass shoulder.

Diana Einhorn was thrown from the car during the accident. Diana and her husband, Sidney Einhorn, both of Boca Raton, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Lunda Boliere, Naomi Graham and Elise Sharon Graham were all transported to St. Mary's Medical Center where they were listed in critical condition.

The Highway Patrol is looking for the car that cut off the 2004 Toyota Avalon, but troopers do not yet have a description. Anyone with information about the Palm Beach car accident is asked to call Cpl. Anibal Monroig at 561-357-4000.

Woman Causes Florida Car Crash, Then is Rescued by Person She Hit

On June 22, a Miami Springs woman caused a Florida car crash that sent her car careening into a canal. As she frantically tried to escape from her sinking car, she was rescued by the man whom she had struck just moments earlier.

On her way home from her daughter’s house, Carmen Tapp, 67, was driving her Ford Focus south on Flamingo Circle. As she attempted to cross the median of Westward Drive, she struck a 2008 Mitsubishi. The force of the crash caused her car to continue traveling straight into a canal.

Disoriented and confused, Tapp struggled to escape from her sinking car. Unable to open the door against the water pressure, and with water rushing in at her feet, she attempted unsuccessfully to break a window.

Twenty-seven-year-old Jason Cruz, whom she has just struck, raced from his car into the canal. With the help of another bystander, Cruz was able to get the car rolled up onto the side of the canal, thereby getting the passenger side out of the water. Tapp was then able to get to the passenger side of her car, where Cruz helped her escape.

When asked about his heroic reaction, Cruz stated, “When she hit me I was in shock and I look over and see the back end of her car going into the canal. I took off my shoes and shirt and just jumped in. I didn't have time to think about it.”

Tapp and Cruz both emerged uninjured.

Deadly Boynton Beach, Florida Car Crash Kills One and Injures Five

A Boynton Beach car crash involving a van full of special-needs adults leaves one dead and at least five wounded.

On June 23, a Gayle Transportation van which had been transporting special-needs adults from the Boca Habilitation Center on Boca Rio Rd, crashed into the Boynton Beach Boulevard exit sign on northbound I-95.

At approximately 3:15 pm, Shanee Davila, 18, of Lake Worth, was driving her Toyota Scion northbound on I-95 in the lane adjacent to the HOV lane. Davila attempted to merge into the HOV lane, but over-corrected when she noticed another car in the lane. She swerved across all traffic lanes and struck the Gayle Transportation van, which was traveling in the outermost lane of the highway. This sent the van onto the shoulder, where it collided with the pole of the Boynton Beach Boulevard exit sign.

The injuries sustained by passengers in the van were devastating. 3 passengers, Regindia Palmore, 36; Anthony Laster, 26; and Gracita Clairvoyant, 33, were seriously injured and Rachelle Thaddies, 54, was killed. The driver of the van, Gary Anthony Francis, 49, of Riviera Beach, had to be extricated from the van along with two other passengers. He was transported to the hospital, but his injuries were less serious, and he is listed in stable condition.

The driver of the Toyota Scion, Shanee Davila, was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Pedestrian Killed in West Palm Beach Hit-and-Run

A devastating West Palm Beach pedestrian fatality occurred in the early morning of Saturday, June 12, when a man was struck and killed in a West Palm Beach hit-and-run.

Samuel Castro, 24, of Greenacres, was crossing in the 6500 block Lake Worth Road at approximately 2:40 a.m. when he was struck by an SUV. According to onlookers, the SUV initially stopped at the scene; when more people stopped to help, however, the SUV fled the scene. The vehicle was last known to be heading south on Jog Road.

Be aware of your surroundings. Do not ride in cars’ blind spots. Watch for other vehicles and pedestrians at intersections. Also be aware of other vehicles that may be turning left as you are passing.
Obtain a valid motorcycle operator’s license. One out of every four motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes do not have a valid license. Maintaining a valid license ensures you continue your motorcycle safety education so that you may protect yourself on the road.

McNeil Launches a Massive Recall on Children's Medications

On April 30, 2010, McNeil Consumer Healthcare announced a voluntary recall of certain OTC infants’ and children’s medications. This recall includes liquid Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec, and Benadryl.

McNeil Consumer Healthcare is initiating this recall because some of these products may not meet required quality standards. No adverse medical affects have been reported; however, as a precautionary measure, parents and caregivers should not administer these products to their children. Some of the products included in the recall may contain a higher concentration of active ingredients than is specified, others may contain inactive ingredients that may not meet internal testing requirements, and others may contain tiny particles. While the potential for serious medical issues is unlikely, the company advises consumers who have purchased these recalled products to discontinue use.

There are many generic versions of these products on the market. These generic versions are not affected by the recall and are considered safe to use. If you have any questions concerning the generic versions of these products, please consult with doctor or pharmacist.

Lake Worth Car Accident Sends One to the Hospital

A Lake Worth car accident involving a broken down car results in three men getting hit by another vehicle, sending one of them to a nearby hospital. The incident took place at approximately 4:00 AM on Sunday morning, April 25, 2010, along 10th Avenue.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, three men were pushing a disabled car to the side of the road along 10th Avenue at Barnett Street when they were struck by another car. Deputies report that one of the victims was transported to Delray Medical Center where the person was treated for injuries sustained in the accident. Their condition was not made known

It was unclear if any of the other men suffered injuries as a result of the incident. The victim’s identities were not made available.

It was also not made known as to why the unidentified driver slammed into the three men. Police have yet to announce the cause or whether they will press charges against the driver.

The early morning Lake Worth auto accident is still under investigation by local authorities.

Boynton Beach Auto Accident Involves School Bus

A Boynton Beach auto accident involving two vehicles, including a school bus carrying 15 elementary students, leaves both vehicles damaged. The unfortunate incident took place on Wednesday afternoon, April 21, 2010, at the intersection of Southwest 13th Avenue and Southwest Second Street.

According to Boynton Beach Fire Rescue spokesperson Steve Lewis, the driver of a Lincoln Town Car slammed into the front of a Palm Beach County school bus. The bus was transporting 15 students from Forest Park Elementary School in Boynton Beach when the incident occurred.

Fortunately, authorities report that none of the students suffered injuries as a result of the two-vehicle crash. It was unclear as to why the driver of the Lincoln Town Car hit the school bus or who was at fault. Another school bus was quickly dispersed to retrieve the 15 students following the collision.

The accident left the school bus with only minor damage. The front of the Town Car was reported as being badly damaged from the wreck.

The Boynton Beach auto accident is still under investigation by local authorities.

Florida House Ready to Address Wrongful Death Statute of Limitations

Toyota Recalls Continue – What Does This Mean For Florida Drivers?

Toyota Motor Corp. halted the sales of the Lexus GX 460, not long after Consumer Reports announced that the SUV had an unusually high risk of rollovers during turns.

“We are taking the situation with the GX 460 very seriously and are determined to identify and correct the issue Consumer Reports identified,” Toyota said in a statement.

Consumer Reports stated that when the SUV was “pushed to its limits on a handling course on CR’s test track, the rear of the GX CR purchased slid out until the vehicle was almost sideways before the electronic stability control system was able to regain control.”

A week after suspending the sale of the GX 460, Toyota decided to recall 13,000 of these vehicles. Toyota engineers had replicated the handling flaw that Consumer Reports found, by conducting tests on all Toyota and Lexus-brand SUVs. The flaw was only discovered in the GX 460 and Land Cruiser Prado models. The Land Cruisers were only recalled in countries with left-hand drive.

Lexus group vice president, Mark Templin, said that Lexus and the dealers have acted promptly to resolve the situation.

This Lexus recall follows a previous one made by the company, involving millions of Toyota vehicles. These design defects have left many people wondering what their chances are of being injured in a Florida car accident caused by a Toyota vehicle.

Florida Nursing Home Under Investigation For Abuse

According to police, a 76-year-old woman, who was a resident at the Ridgecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, suffered two broken legs and a broken shoulder after a fall. The police report indicates that the nursing home resident was injured when she fell from her bed. The woman was placed back in her bed where she was in pain for several hours.

What’s alarming about this story is that emergency crews were allegedly not called to the scene until nearly 12 hours after the woman was injured. Rescue crews transported the victim to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.

The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration is investigating this nursing home facility. The agency started its investigation on February 24, due to a complaint. This investigation is not the first for the Ridgecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. It was also investigated on Dec. 2, 2009 for complaints of sanitary deficiency.

Trucker Texting Ban Could Lower the Amount of Florida Truck Accidents

Up to this point, commercial truckers and bus drivers have been allowed to text and drive in Florida. However, things have changed.

The federal government has recently banned bus drivers and truckers from texting while driving. These new restrictions apply to interstate truckers and operators of vehicles carrying at least eight passengers. Truckers and bus drivers who violate this ban could be fined up to $2,750. It will be interesting to see the impact this ban will have on the amount of Florida truck accidents.

"This helps to establish a uniform safe application of texting bans around the country. This is a high-risk behavior. Drivers who text take their eyes off the road for (an average of) 4.6 seconds. In this congested environment, we cannot allow these conditions to continue," said Anne Ferro, head of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Man Lying in Roadway Causes Deadly Palm Beach Car Accident

Early Sunday morning, a man lying in the road was struck and killed, and left for dead in a Palm Beach hit-and-run car accident.

At around 4:30 a.m., twenty-four-year-old Darrell Jean Renaud was lying in the street, just south of Roebuck Road. A Toyota Sedan approached and struck the man, and then fled the scene.

It is not known why Jean Renaud was lying in the road, but county records show that he has been arrested for disorderly conduct and public intoxication twice in the past two years.

Jean Renald died at the scene.

Investigators were searching for the driver of the vehicle by early Sunday morning. They have since discovered that the 2005 Toyota sedan was driven by Sheila H. Bolden, 53, of West Palm Beach.

Investigators did not state how Bolden was found or why she did not stop when she struck Jean Renaud in the roadway. As of Monday morning, no charges had been filed against Bolden or her passenger, Martel McCalla of West Palm Beach.

West Palm Beach Woman Hit by Palm Beach County Sheriff's Van

A Palm Beach car crash occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 6, when a Palm Beach County Sheriff's van collided with a motorized scooter driven by a sixty-eight-year-old woman.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., the van, driven by civilian accident investigator, Gerlienus Hester, 44, was traveling eastbound along Westgate Avenue. Sixty-eight-year-old Barbara Guyton, of West Palm Beach, was traveling westbound along the same road on her motorized scooter. Hester, who presumably did not see Guyton, attempted a left turn onto Indian Drive.

The van hit the passing scooter on the left side, forcing it under the Palm Beach County Sheriff's van. Guyton had to be extricated from under the van and was transported to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach. She was listed in critical condition later that evening. Thankfully, her condition has since been upgraded to fair.

A police investigation into the incident is still underway.

Fatal Martin County Car Crash Kills 1, Injures 2 Near Palm Beach

In the early morning of July 4, a Cape Canaveral woman was fatally injured in a Florida car crash, near the Palm Beach county line.

Shortly after 5:00 a.m. a 63-year-old woman, whose name has not yet been released, was traveling in the northbound inside lane of Interstate 95. As she was driving north in her 2006 Chevy Impala about four miles south of the Bridge Road exit to Hobe Sound, she struck a 2011 Hyundai Sonata.

The Chevy's front left side struck the front left side of the Hyundai, driven by Kandace Keeling, 23, of Jensen Beach.

The impact pushed Keeling's car onto the shoulder, while the Chevy was forced into another northbound lane. A 2008 Dodge Ram, driven by Patrick Stone, 26, of Vero Beach, then struck the woman's Chevy.

Stone suffered minor injuries in the accident. Keeling was transported to St. Mary's Medical Center in serious condition. The woman in the Chevy died at the scene. Troopers are still attempting to notify her family of the incident.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators suspect that Keeling's car may have been traveling the wrong way at the time of the accident, but this has not yet been confirmed.

The involvement of drugs or alcohol has not been confirmed.

Three Injured When SUV Lands on Top of Car in Florida Car Crash

Three people have been injured in a Florida car wreck that left an SUV resting on top of a car.

On July 1, at about 6:40 am, Jordan Joseph, 34, of Lake Worth, was driving a 1995 Honda sedan northbound on Interstate 95. While traveling in the center lane near mile marker 90, just north of the Martin County and Palm Beach County lines, one of Joseph's rear tires blew, causing him to lose control.

Nichole Cooler, 20, of Palm City, was driving along the inside lane in her 2002 Kia sport -utility vehicle when the Honda spun into her path.

The SUV struck the side of the Honda, sending both vehicles careening onto the grassy median. The SUV flipped over at least once before coming to rest upon the hood and windshield of the Honda.

Jean Dhaiti, 36, also of Lake Worth, was traveling in the Honda with Joseph. All three people involved were taken Jupiter Medical Center where they were treated for minor injuries.

New Information Regarding Palm Beach Polo Club Founder's Fatal Crash

New documents, which were released on June 21, state that John Goodman, founder of Wellington's International Polo Club Palm Beach, was drinking just minutes before his involvement in a fatal Palm Beach car crash last February.

At approximately 1:00 a.m. on February 12, Goodman, 46, flew through a stop sign at approximately 63 mph and crashed into a car driven by Scott Wilson, 23. Wilson’s vehicle rolled into a nearby canal, where he was left to drown, strapped into the driver’s seat of his vehicle.

Cathleen Lewter, who was the bartender at the Player's Club in Wellington that night, stated that Goodman spent over $200 on alcohol throughout the course of the evening, including ten shots of tequila and a vodka tonic.

Wilson’s destination on the early morning of February 12 still has not been determined, as he had already driven past his residence when the accident occurred. Stacey Shore, a friend who was with Goodman throughout the night, said that the Polo Club founder asked her to go with him to get cocaine. Shore declined his offer and Goodman left the Club alone, just moments before the horrific accident.

Hospital tests did not reveal any cocaine in Wilson’s system, but did detect the presence of the painkillers hydrocodone and dihydrocodeine. Wilson stated that these medications were for chronic back pain. Blood tests also revealed that Goodman's blood-alcohol level in the hospital was 0.177, which is more than twice the legal limit for driving in Florida.

Palm City Man Killed in Fatal Florida Motorcycle Crash

A Palm City man was fatally injured early Wednesday morning when a Jeep collided with his motorcycle in a deadly Palm City motorcycle crash.

Motorcyclist John Garcia, 63, was traveling along Mapp Road in Palm City when his motorcycle was struck by a Jeep. The Jeep, driven by John K. Holman, 47, failed to yield the right of way to the motorcycle when making a left turn onto Catalina Street. The Jeep then collided with Garcia’s motorcycle.

Although Garcia was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, he suffered fatal injuries. Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene.

Holman was also traveling with his fifteen-year-old son. Both were wearing seat belts and neither was injured.

Intracoastal Waterway Boat Wreck Leaves Palm Beach Deputy Injured

A frightening boat wreck near Jupiter has traumatically injured a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

At approximately 4:00 p.m. on June 12, 2010, Deputy Cheryl Griffin, 42, was injured in an off-duty accident in her private boat. Griffin was traveling through the Intracoastal Waterway near the 14000 block of Paradise Point Road when she crashed her boat into a dry dock. The impact caused a boat on the lift to fall down onto her twenty-foot vessel.

The accident sent debris flying, pinning Griffin underwater. A bystander, who has not yet been identified, jumped into the water, freed Deputy Griffin, and pulled her to shore with the aid of another neighbor.

Griffin, who was pinned underwater for several minutes, sustained numerous injuries, including broken vertebrae in her neck and a severe infection resulting from bacteria in the Intracoastal water. Doctors were also forced to amputate her arm due to the severity of her injuries.

Deputy Griffin was airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where she remains in a coma. She is listed in critical but stable condition. Tests indicate that she has normal brain activity, despite having been pinned underwater for some time.

Thirty-eight-year-old Melissa Burdeen, who was a passenger in the boat, sustained minor injuries. She was transported to Jupiter Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

Recent data released by the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration reveals that Florida’s Interstate 95 is the most dangerous interstate highway in the United States. Florida’s 382-mile stretch of I-95 is shown to have the highest rate of fatal Florida auto accidents, with 1.73 fatal accidents per mile.

Police presence on the roadways used to be enough to make people slow down and obey traffic laws; however, this is no longer that case.

Florida State Patrol Lt. Alex Annunziato believes that an increase in distracted driving is to blame. He states, “I get people passing me all the time. I see a lot of aggressive driving out there, a lot of lane-changing.”

Often, when he pulls people over, he realizes just how distracted the drivers are. “They're completely startled. You can absolutely see it when my lights come on. They just have this look of, ‘Where did this guy come from?’”

It is not just the usage of cell phones and GPS systems that is creating a big risk on the roadway, but the quantity as well. “I think it's the volume coupled with the level of distraction that's present in the driving environment these days,” Annunziato said. “That really is a recipe for what we've been seeing here.”

Florida Motorcycle Crash Kills West Palm Beach Teen

Reckless motorcycle driving led to the death of a 17-year-old West Palm Beach teen on Saturday, June 5.

On Saturday morning, a teenager from West Palm Beach was tragically killed when his motorcycle collided with a sport utility vehicle. The fatal Florida motorcycle crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. near the 9000 block of Wiles Road in Coral Springs.

Michael Ferraz Lanzoni, 17, was driving his Suzuki motorcycle eastbound on Wiles Road. Andrea Baigorria, 21, was driving a Ford SUV and travelling westbound on Wiles Road. As Biagorria was making a left turn, she was struck on the rear of her SUV by Lanzoni. Lanzoni was ejected upon impact, flying approximately 70 feet through the air before landing in some nearby brush.

Lanzoni was wearing a helmet, but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Several witness accounts state that Lanzoni was travelling at excessive speeds and driving recklessly, swerving in and out of traffic just before the Florida motorcycle accident. A police officer also stated that he witnessed Lanzoni running a red traffic light just moments before the fatal Florida motorcycle crash.

Baigorria was transported to Coral Springs Medical Center where she was treated by medical professionals and released with minor injuries.

"Top Kill" is Failing to Stop BP Gulf of Mexico Oil Leak

On April 20, an exploratory offshore drilling rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 and causing a massive oil spill that is devastating the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas and Florida.

The size of this oil leak was originally estimated to be approximately 1,000 barrels per day; however, this estimate has since been raised to 14,000 to 19,000 barrels per day. Now, one month into this massive oil spill, the seam of oil has emptied as much as 740,000 barrels into the Gulf. At 42 gallons per barrel, this puts the amount of crude oil that has been emptied into the Gulf at over 31 million gallons. This may seem like an incomprehensible amount, but, according to BP, this is only 1.5% of the total oil in the Macondo oil deposit.

This disaster is already the nation’s worst oil spill disaster as well as the worst man-made disaster ever recorded. And, what is just as disturbing, is that there is no immediate end in sight.

BP’s crucial “top kill” effort, which was an effort to plug the deep sea well with heavy drilling mud, has not been successful. The next plan of action is to attempt to contain the flow of oil from a leak with a lower marine riser package (LMRP) cap. The LMRP cap procedure is expected to take four to seven days.

Founder of Palm Beach Polo Club Arrested Months After Fatal Crash

John Goodman, 46, founder of Palm Beach International Polo Club, was arrested on May 18 for his involvement in a fatal Wellington car accident. This arrest comes after a 3-month investigation into the crash that resulted in the death of Scott Patrick Wilson, 23, who was a recent University of Central Florida mechanical engineering graduate.

At approximately 1 a.m. on February 12, Goodman, who was driving his Bentley after a night of drinking, ran a stop sign and collided with Wilson’s Hyundai Sonata, sending it rolling into a canal. According to the arrest affidavit, “Goodman fled the scene and left Wilson to drown in the canal, belted in the driver seat of his vehicle.”

Goodman fled the scene and came upon a nearby trailer, where he proceeded to call his girlfriend before calling 911. Phone records show that he called his girlfriend at 1:52 a.m. before calling 911 at 1:55 a.m.

According to the arrest affidavit, when deputies found Goodman, his speech was slurred and he smelled of alcohol. They did not, however, issue a breathalyzer test. Goodman was taken to the Wellington Regional Medical Center for his minor injuries. A forced bold test was taken and, as stated in the arrest affidavit, “The results of the blood tests showed that Goodman had a blood alcohol level of .177.”

Goodman was arrested on charges of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide, both with failure to render aid. If convicted, Goodman could face up to 30 years in prison for each charge. He has since been released on a 100,000 bail.

Teen, Accused of Killing Woman in Riviera Beach Hit-and-Run, Charged a

Jermaine Nixon, a 15-year-old who is accused of running over and killing a Riviera Beach woman, has been charged as an adult and booked into the Palm Beach County jail at 10 p.m. on Thursday.

On March 19, Nixon lost control of a stolen 1997 silver Chevrolet Malibu and hit and killed Kathryn Veroxie, 21, who was walking near the intersection of Garden Road and Blue Heron Boulevard.

Kathryn Veroxie, known as “Kat,” moved to live with her aunt and uncle in Jupiter seven years ago after her mother died of breast cancer. Her father died the following year. She was attending Palm Beach State College and worked as a cashier at Publix. Veroxie, whose family states that she was autistic, was walking home to her new apartment following a date with her boyfriend.

Nixon, who fled the scene, was stopped by police a short distance away. Nixon initially denied driving the vehicle and stated that the driver fled; however, he later surrendered to the Department of Juvenile Justice on May 1, after a warrant for his arrest was issued. He has been charged with negligent vehicle manslaughter, leaving the scene of a fatal crash, driving without a license, and grand theft.

Lake Worth Man Killed in Rollover Crash Near Boynton Beach

A tow truck driver who attempted to make an illegal u-turn on the Florida Turnpike on Monday, May 10, caused a fatal Florida auto accident that closed the Turnpike's southbound lanes for nearly 2 hours.

At approximately 11:15 am, tow truck driver Mark Walter Edwards, 42, of West Palm Beach was driving southbound on the Florida Turnpike. He attempted to make an illegal U-turn about 4 miles north of Atlantic Avenue. Edwards slowed and pulled his truck into the median, but the rear of his truck remained protruding into the adjacent traffic lane.

A van driven by Anthony Giardina, 32, of Lake Worth collided with the tow truck and rolled over. According to a Florida Highway Patrol news release, Giardina, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene. Edwards did not sustain any injuries.

This fatal Florida accident is still under investigation by the FHP and charges are pending. The use of drugs or alcohol by either party is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

Deadly Delray Beach Boat Accident Proves to be Alcohol-Related

A late night boat ride in Delray Beach, which involved alcohol and speeding, resulted in a tragic Delray Beach boat accident.

On Saturday, May 8, at approximately 2 a.m., a boat driven by Mandy Romeu, 42, of Deerfield Beach crashed into a navigational marker in the Intracoastal Waterway. Passenger Christopher Smith, 31, of Boynton Beach was thrown from the boat into the canal, where he died, said investigators with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

According to police, Romeu met Christopher Smith and his sister, Alexandra Smith, at a nightclub on Friday night. After consuming many alcoholic drinks throughout the night, Romeu invited the Smiths to take a late night ride in his 35 foot boat. 
This deadly boat ride involved the dangerous combination of alcohol intoxication and speeding. According to the FWC, Romeu admitted that he consumed “about four rum and cokes” from 7pm to midnight. He was also said to have been traveling at 30-40 miles per hour in an “idle speed zone.”

Romeu and Alexandra Smith were unharmed in the accident. Investigators state that none of those on board were wearing life jackets.

Romeu has been charged with vessel homicide, reckless operation of a vehicle and violation of navigational rules. Bond was set at $25,000 during a court appearance on Sunday.  Driving any vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs can result in catastrophic consequences. Deadly Greenacres Car Accident May Be Linked to Street Racing

A Greenacres car accident involving three vehicles leaves one person dead and two others injured after an apparent street racing incident goes bad. The crash took place on Friday, April 23, 2010, at the intersection of Melaleuca Lane and Jog Road.

According to witnesses, two cars were seen speeding northbound on Jog Road when one of the vehicles collided with a third car. The accident left one person dead and two others injured, including an unidentified 14-year-old girl who was transported to a local hospital and treated for injuries sustained in the accident.

The victim was trapped inside the car and had to be extricated by rescue crews. Her condition was not made known.

The witnesses also reported that the third car, which was not directly involved in the crash, fled the accident scene. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department is attempting to determine if the accident was a result of a street race.

West Palm Beach Car Accident Turns Deadly

A West Palm Beach car accident involving a speeding Ford Mustang leaves one person dead and sends another to the hospital. The incident took place on Friday evening, April 9, 2010, along Georgia Avenue, south of Forest Hill Boulevard.

According to reports, three friends, 21-year-old Kyle Sawyer, 17-year-old Allie Sheffield and 19-year-old Anthony Valdesuso, just left volleyball practice at Forest Hill High School when they piled into Valdesuso’s Ford Mustang.

According to reports, Valdesuso was reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph on the 2-lane road. He was driving in a 30 mph zone when he lost control of the vehicle as he attempted to pass another car.

Rescue crews transported Sheffield to a nearby hospital where she was treated for severe head injuries. Unfortunately, she died the next day.

Sawyer was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center. He suffered a fractured neck, pelvis and hip. Sawyer was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and was ejected from the car.

The driver, Valdesuso, was not seriously injured in the crash. Police have not announced whether or not they will file any charges against him.

Sawyer reported that just before the crash, Sheffield looked over at Valdesuso and said, “Can you drive fast please? I’ve never driven fast before in a Mustang.”

Police are still investigating the accident.

A West Palm Beach car accident claims the life of a high school student after the car she was riding in slams into a utility pole. The incident took place at approximately 6:45 PM on Friday evening, April 9, 2010, along Georgia Avenue.

According to the West Palm Beach Police Department, 19-year-old Anthony Valdesuso was driving a Ford Mustang and speeding southbound on Georgia Avenue when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a utility pole. Valdesuso suffered minor injuries in the collision.

Allison Sheffield, a 16-year-old Forest Hill High School sophomore was riding in the passenger seat at the time of the accident. Rescue crews transported Sheffield to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead a day later from injuries sustained in the accident.

A third victim, 21-year-old Kyle Sawyer, was riding in the backseat. He was reported as not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the Ford. Sawyer was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center and treated for spinal cord injuries. He has been listed in stable condition.

A Palm Beach pedestrian accident leads to the death of one man after he is struck while crossing the road. The incident took place at approximately 6:30 AM on Sunday morning, April 4, 2010, on Ocean Drive.

According to police, a man was crossing Ocean Drive, also known as State Road A1A, just south of Donald Ross Road, when a Lexus struck him. The victim, Loren Robert Ray, 80, of Palm Beach Gardens, was walking to an Easter sunrise service when he was hit.

Rescue crews transported Ray to St. Mary’s Medical Center where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the accident.

Ray was attempting to cross from west to east when he stepped in front of the Lexus. The driver has been identified as Thomas Bright, 70, of Juno Beach. It was unclear as to whether Bright was injured in the incident.

The fatal Palm Beach accident is still under investigation by local authorities. Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson Lt. Tim Frith indicated that they are taking into account issues regarding street lighting considering the accident took place just before dawn.

A West Palm Beach car accident involving a pick-up truck leaves two people dead after the truck becomes submerged in a canal. The incident took place at approximately 4:00 AM on Tuesday morning, March 30, 2010, near the Beeline Highway and Caloosa Boulevard.

According to deputies, the driver of the pick-up truck lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a bridge. The truck then landed and became submerged in a canal. The force of the impact caused both the driver and the passenger to be ejected from the truck.

Police have identified the victims as 27-year-old Jay Brandon Collins and 15-year-old Osvaldo Estremera. One of the victims was pulled from the canal while the second victim was found by rescue crews on the bridge. Both victims were pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the early morning crash.

“Looking at a crash where people are ejected that’s obviously the first point you want to look at,” said Sgt John Churchill. “Where they wearing seatbelts or not? In most cases they’re not.”

The West Palm Beach auto accident is still under investigation by local authorities. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. Police are still trying to figure out if speed or alcohol played a role.

West Palm Beach Car Accident Involves Police Chase

A West Palm Beach car accident involving a stolen car and a police chase ends with a suspect hospitalized. The incident began in Boynton Beach at approximately 10:45 AM on Friday morning, March 19, 2010.

According to reports, Boynton Beach police officer Stephen Maiorino spotted a stolen Honda Civic and gave chase. The driver of the stolen vehicle, 22-year-old Ivan Johnson, fled onto Interstate 95, after failing to pull over.

Johnson then exited Forest Hill Boulevard and finally came to a stop on Forest Court, a dead-end street. Both the Honda and the police cruiser caught on fire after the chase continued on foot.
Police believe that the Honda’s hot exhaust system may have led to the dry grass catching on fire. Unfortunately, the police cruiser was stopped too close to the Honda and caught on fire, as well.

Maiorino was able to apprehend Johnson by tackling him to the ground. Rescue crews transported the suspect to St. Mary’s Medical Center after complaining of injuries.

Maiorino also complained of a hand injury. He went to a nearby walk-in clinic.

Johnson’s passenger, 18-year-old Patrick McIntosh, was able to flee the accident scene. He was arrested a short time later by West Palm Beach Police officers.

Boca Raton Auto Accident Kills 20-Year-Old

A Boca Raton car accident involving two vehicles sends a car into a canal and killing a 20-year-old man. The incident took place at approximately 6:30 PM on Thursday evening, March 4, 2010, on South Military Trail.

According to local police, a 1992 Mercedes was heading south on South Military Trail near Champion Way at a high rate of speed when the incident occurred. As the Mercedes quickly approached the rear of a 1999 Ford Taurus, the driver hit the brakes, struck a guardrail and clipped the back of the Ford. The impact caused the Mercedes to flip over and land in a canal in about 10 feet of water.

The driver of the Mercedes has been identified as 20-year-old Nicholas R. Rozs. Rescue crews transported Rozs to Delray Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the accident.

It is unclear as to whether the driver of the Ford, 64-year-old Marilyn Gordon, suffered injuries in the two-vehicle wreck.

The Boca Raton auto accident is still under investigation by local authorities.

Florida Car Accident Kills 70-Year-Old Woman

A Florida car accident involving two vehicles leaves a 70-year-old Orlando woman dead after the vehicles collide head-on. The incident took place at approximately 12:55 PM on Wednesday afternoon, March 10, 2010, on Conway Road at Roy Street.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Chevrolet drove over a raised median and struck a Dodge van head-on while traveling southbound on Conway Road at Roy Street. A Palm Beach Gardens car accident involving two vehicles leaves at least one person injured after the two vehicles collide. The incident took place at approximately 5:00 AM on Friday morning, February 26, 2010, along Interstate 95 just north of PGA Boulevard.

According to reports, the two vehicles collided along Interstate 95 blocking two lanes. One person was reported as being injured. Rescue crews had to use special equipment to remove the victim from the mangled vehicle.

Boynton Beach Motorcycle Accident Leaves Man in Critical Condition

A Boynton Beach motorcycle accident involving two vehicles leaves a motorcyclist fighting for his life. The incident took place at approximately 4:45 PM on Tuesday afternoon, February 2, 2010, near West Boynton Beach Boulevard and Northwest Eighth Street.

When officers arrived on the scene they found the motorcyclist, Joseph S. Williams, 18, of Boynton Beach, unconscious on the road. They also found a smashed motorcycle helmet. Rescue crews transported Williams to Delray Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition from injuries sustained in the accident.

According to Boynton Beach Police, Williams suffered critical injures including hemorrhaging in the brain, a broken femur, broken bones in his neck and numerous internal injuries. Doctors had to give the motorcyclist massive blood transfusions.

Witnesses told police that a white Isuzu turned in front of the motorcycle, causing Williams to lay down the bike. The car then fled the scene.

Police later located the driver and have him as Sergio Herrera-Pena, 32, of Lake Worth. Herrera-Pena has been charged with failure to remain at the scene of an accident.

The Boynton Beach accident is still under investigation by local authorities.

According to investigators, John B. Goodman, millionaire and founder of the International Polo Club Palm Beach, was driving a Bentley when he ran a stop sign and slammed into a Hyundai. The force of the impact sent the Hyundai into a canal killing the driver, Scott Wilson, 23, of Wellington.

Goodman had just left a local restaurant and investigators believe that he had been drinking prior to the accident. They are currently awaiting toxicology reports to confirm if he was driving under the influence of alcohol or another substance.

Wilson had recently graduated from the University of Central Florida and was about to take a job as a mechanical engineer.

“He was just the most amazing son,” said Wilson’s mother, Lili Wilson.

The fatal Wellington auto accident is still under investigation by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, which has not yet handed the case over to the State Attorney’s Office.

Palm Beach Truck Accident Leaves One Person Dead

A Palm Beach truck accident involving a tractor-trailer and an overturned truck leaves one man dead. The incident took place late Monday evening, February 8, 2010, along U.S. 27.

According to reports, a driver of a truck that was transporting livestock southbound on U.S. 27 lost control of the vehicle, causing the truck to become jackknifed and eventually overturning on its side. That is when the tractor-trailer truck smashed into it, killing the driver of the tractor-trailer, who has been identified as 64-year-old John Edward James.

The driver of the truck that was transporting the livestock has been identified as 43-year-old Benigno Gomez. He was reportedly not injured in the crash.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Gomez made an attempt to warn James by waving a flashlight. Unfortunately, James was unable to stop in time and slammed into the overturned truck.

Reports indicate that approximately 100 animals were killed in the accident. The accident shut down U.S. 27 for the remainder of the night and well into the next morning to allow crews to clean-up the accident scene.

The Palm Beach tractor-trailer accident is still under investigation by local authorities. However, investigators are still trying to determine what caused the original truck to become overturned.

Lake Worth Auto Accident Injures Mother and Son

A Lake Worth auto accident involving two pedestrians leaves a mother and son hospitalized after a car drives onto a sidewalk. The incident took place at approximately 12:00 PM on Monday afternoon, February 1, 2010, at the corner of Lake Avenue and Dixie Highway.

According to the Palm Beach County's Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred when Winnifred Baugh, 63, who was traveling northbound on Dixie Highway, drove his car onto the sidewalk. He struck two traffic signs before striking the woman and her son, who were on the sidewalk and waiting at the corner when the incident took place.

The victims, Shena Wright and her 9-year-old son, Terrell Caldwell, were severely inured in the crash. Rescue crews transported the both of them to Delray Medical Center where they were listed in critical condition.

According to reports, Wright suffered broken bones and internal injuries. Her son was hospitalized with severe head injuries.

The Lake Worth auto accident is still under investigation by local authorities. It has not been determined as to why Baugh left the roadway and struck the mother and her son. No charges have been filed as of yet.

West Palm Beach Car Accident Kills 3-Month-Old

A West Palm Beach car accident involving a chain-reaction crash leaves a 3-month-old dead and five others injured. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon, January 30, 2010, on Forest Hill Boulevard near Kudza Road.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Yanitza Gonzalez, 27, of West Palm Beach, was driving westbound in a 1999 Honda when she was rear-ended by a 2010 Honda. The baby, 3-month-old Yanley Gonzalez, was a passenger in the Honda.

Rescue workers transported Yanley to Delray Medical Center. Unfortunately, the 3-month-old was pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the accident.

Yanitza Gonzales and another passenger in the Honda were also taken to Delray Medical Center. They were listed in satisfactory condition, according to a hospital official.

The driver that rear-ended Gonzalez has been identified as Jason F. Brown, 30, of Middletown. Brown was also transported to Delray Medical Center where he was treated for serious injuries.

The force of the impact pushed Gonzalez's car into a 1995 Mitsubishi driven by Jose Ramos, 38, of West Palm Beach. Ramos and 2-year-old Maria Carmona were both taken to Wellington Regional Medical Center and treated for injuries.

The fatal West Palm Beach accident is still under investigation by local authorities. According to sheriff's deputies, drugs and alcohol may have played a role in the crash.
