I’ve heard Actos can cause liver damage. Is that true?

You’re right to be concerned about risks to your liver when taking Actos for type-2 diabetes.

When you take any medication, your liver is in charge of breaking down the drug and absorbing it into your body. However, your liver will also try to protect you against poisons in the drug, and will work overtime to remove them from your system. Since pioglitazone has a potential to do harm, it puts a strain on the liver, and can lead to renal failure, Actos-induced toxic hepatitis, or even death.

Those who already suffer from liver problems are at a high risk of renal failure when taking Actos, but unfortunately, they’re not the only ones. The long-term effects of taking Actos can damage even normal livers, increasing enzymes that deteriorate the healthy renal tissue day by day. Some studies have even shown that Actos patients will exhibit signs of irregular liver function in as little as one week.

If you experience any of these side-effects when using Actos in Palm Beach, seek a doctor’s attention immediately:

  • A yellowing of the skin, fingernails and whites of the eyes
  • Dark urine or blood when urinating
  • Nausea or loss of appetite
  • Muscle weakness or fatigue
  • Blindness or impaired vision
  • Shortness of breath, dizziness or fainting spells
  • Depression or other changes in attitude

Since it can take weeks or even months for the symptoms of liver damage to become present in Actos patients, doctors must be vigilant in testing patients for signs of liver failure. Testing includes blood and urine samples, liver function tests, and regular checkups to make sure the liver is performing normally.

As trusted Palm Beach Actos attorneys, we have seen far too many diabetic patients suffer from a drug that was supposed to be making them healthy. The worst part is that many people will not realize the damage that has been done until it’s too late-when their life depends on a liver transplant due to Actos toxicity.

Don’t wait for the worst to happen before getting help! If taking Actos in Florida has caused a serious injury, call Fetterman & Associates today at (866) 865-1244 for a free consultation.
