Are Florida Car Accidents the Leading Cause of Child Death?
You have probably never considered the leading cause of death among children. Who would want to think about such an awful thing? Unfortunately, if you are a parent or caregiver, you need to be alert to the biggest risk that children face, which has to do with car accidents. It has been reported that motor vehicle related-injuries claim the lives of more children and young adults than any other single cause in the United States. In fact, auto accidents are the leading cause of death from unintentional injury for people among all the age groups.Without question, car accidents are a problem that plague America, but Florida children seem to be at a particularly high risk. It could be that Florida weather permits children to be outside playing, riding bikes and participating sports throughout most of the year. Although the reason is unclear, children are in danger of being hit by a car or injured while riding in a vehicle.
There are regular reports of auto accidents involving young people in Florida. In January 2010, an Edgewater car accident caused a 10-year-old girl to become critically injured. She was hit by a car while riding her kick scooter in the Daytona Beach area. The young girl was left fighting for her life.
What is so unfortunate is that this type of story is not uncommon. The Task Force on Community Preventative Services, an independent, nonfederal organization, gave some recommendations in an effort to help prevent the number of child fatalities resulting from crashes. Below is a summary of the organization’s suggestions, which appeared in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine, Volume 21, Number 4S:
- Increase the use of child safety seats
- Encourage a higher use of safety belts
- Lower the instances of drunk driving
