The Numbers Are In - 665 Florida Traffic Crashes In 2008!

According to the Florida Traffic Crash Statistics Report, an average of 665 traffic crashes occurred every day in 2008. There were a total of 243,342 traffic accidents that year, and surprisingly, the number actually dropped since 2007.

The traffic report was released by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and was a compilation of crash information reported by state and local law enforcement agencies. Based on the information reported in 2008, fatalities have gone down in Florida car accidents.

Electra Theodorides-Bustle, Executive Director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, said in a letter that the agency recognizes that "these statistics are influenced by various factors, including economic conditions, increased safety of vehicles, and fewer vehicles on the road."

Even though accidents and fatalities dropped in 2008, there are still too many people dying in tragic crashes. Some of the alarming facts contained in the report include the following:

  • 2,983 people died in Florida traffic accidents
  • The number of deaths per 100 million miles driven, known as the mileage death rate, was 1.50
  • There were 1,169 alcohol-related fatalities
  • 502 people died in pedestrian accidents
  • Fatalities of teen drivers and passengers decreased to 193 in 2008
  • 532 people were killed in motorcycle crashes
