A Serious Florida Accident Can Lead to Quadriplegia
There are very few things in life as devastating as becoming paralyzed. For most people, it is one of their worst fears. Permanent paralysis, such as quadriplegia, changes everything. The majority of people who are afflicted with this condition lose full control of their arms or legs.
Quadriplegia can occur from a serious Florida car accident, truck accident, slip and fall or other catastrophic event. It is generally the result of a spinal cord injury in the neck area. When the spinal cord is damaged, the communication to and from the brain is impacted, leading to impairment in movement and sensation.
The level of function that a person with quadriplegia will have depends on the severity of the spinal cord injury. A severe spinal cord injury may also affect breathing, in addition to the movement of the limbs. A person who has complete quadriplegia will not be able to move any part of the body below the neck and many people aren’t even able to move their necks. Some patients can move their arms, but they are not able to control their hand movements. Therefore, they cannot grasp things or make other motions that would allow them to have slight independence.
There are also complications associated with quadriplegia. A person suffering from this form of paralysis will lose control of the bladder and bowel at some degree, because the spinal cord nerves control these functions. Pressure sores, also known as bedsores, are another concern for people with quadriplegia. Sores can develop from pressure by the weight of the body. Quadriplegia prohibits patients from moving their own weight, which can increase their risk of bedsores.
If you or someone you love has suffered from quadriplegia due to someone else’s negligence, whether in a car accident, truck accident, motorcycle crash or other event, you may be able to recover compensation.
