Top 15 Driver Distractions That Can Cause Florida Auto Accidents
If you were to take your eyes off the road for a mere three seconds or more, did you know that you will be significantly increasing your chances of being in a Florida car accident? A report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that drivers who are distracted are at a far greater risk of being in an accident or near-collision.The study, “The Impact of Driver Inattention On Near-Crash/Crash Risk: An Analysis Using the 100-Car Naturalistic Driving Study Data,” analyzed data from an 18-month time period. Researchers looked into the relationship between driver inattentiveness and motor vehicle accidents. For the purposes of the study, driver inattention included the driver performing a non-driving task, drowsiness, driving-related inattention and glancing away from the road for an unknown reason.
Cell phones appear to be a major distraction for Florida drivers. Take a recent story as an example. In 2008, a 13-year-old boy was killed in a Marion County car accident when a truck driver rammed into the back of a school bus that was letting children off. Apparently, the truck driver was on his cell phone at the time of the fatal Florida car accident.
However, cell phones aren’t the only things distracting drivers. Some of the top driver distractions identified by researchers include the following:
