Can I really live on the income from my Fort Pierce Social Security Disability Benefits?

Florida residents are often frightened at the thought of living on Social Security Disability benefits. Payees often worry that their checks will decrease-or worse, their payments will be suspended without explanation, leaving them without funds to pay their bills.

It’s hard to rely on government aid as your only source of income. Without an employer or local manager to ask questions, how can you be sure the money you’re entitled to will be there when you need it?

A few common questions about your Florida Social Security Disability benefit payments:

  • How long do I have to wait for my first payment? After you are approved, your payment should arrive six full months after the date of your disability.
  • Will I get paid regularly? You should receive one payment each month. Social Security benefit checks are paid one month behind, for example: January benefits arrive in February, February benefits paid in March, etc.
  • How much will I receive? The amount of your benefits is calculated by your lifetime earnings that have been covered by Social Security. However, several other factors can affect the amount, such as how much you receive through other disability programs, insurance, and worker’s compensation.
  • Why were my benefits suspended? There are certain changes, including your health, work status, or condition of your injury that could result in the suspension of your disability benefits (link to Fort Pierce SSD Benefits blog post).
  • What if my benefits just stopped coming? As long as your condition and financial situation does not improve to the point of self-sufficiency, you have a right to receive disability benefits. If your benefits have stopped coming, the advice of a Fort Pierce Social Security disability lawyer can help you get them reinstated.

We know that many people living on their Social Security benefits rely on them for rent, car payments-even groceries and gas. Having your income unjustly taken away is just as traumatic as being fired from your job for no reason-and is just as unacceptable.
