Truck Accident Causes

There is no question that Florida truck accidents leave behind devastation. The impact of a collision with an 18-wheeler is so severe, that the injuries from the accident are usually catastrophic. People have been known to suffer permanent injuries and unfortunately, countless others have died.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA), along with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), conducted a study into truck accidents in an effort to understand the causes of these tragic crashes. The study involved a national sample of 963 truck collisions that took place from April 2001 through December 2003.

During the study, researchers went to the accident sites to collect information they could use to determine truck accident causes. What researchers discovered was that there were hundreds of factors associated with the crashes. However, they were able to put together a list of the top ten causes of truck accidents. The following is the list based on the researcher’s investigation:

  • 1. Problems with brakes
  • 2. Interruption in traffic
  • 3. Use of prescription drug
  • 4. Driving too fast for conditions
  • 5. Unfamiliarity with the road
  • 6. Road problems
  • 7. Required traffic stop (crosswalk, stop light)
  • 8. Use of non-prescription drug
  • 9. Inadequate surveillance
  • 10. Drowsiness

Truckers are typically on tight deadlines and must deliver their loads on time. When there is an unforeseen delay, these truckers may make potentially fatal decisions, such as skipping sleep breaks and driving too fast. If you have been injured in a Florida truck accident caused by negligence, you can and should hold the driver and trucking company responsible.
