BEXTRA
Pfizer manufactures Bextra. The Food and Drug Administration approved Bextra for sale in the United States in November of 2001. Celebrex is a COX-2–specific inhibitor similar to Bextra and Celebrex. Bextra is used treat the pain, inflammation, and stiffness that accompany osteoarthritis and adult rheumatoid arthritis. Celebrex was the first of these COX-2 inhibitor drugs to gain FDA approval.
Pfizer has revealed that two small clinical trials showed heart bypass surgery patients taking Bextra had a higher risk of stroke and heart attack. Other studies have indicated that patients taking Bextra had a 2.1 times greater chance of heart attack and stroke.
On December 10, 2004, the FDA ordered Pfizer to strengthen Bextra’s box warning. Bextra now includes warnings regarding the risk of life-threatening skin reactions, such as Steven Johnson Syndrome, and a new bolded warning cautioning against the use of Bextra in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
Skin-related side effects of Bextra include:
- Stevens Johnson Syndrome, a potentially life threatening skin reaction whose symptoms include blistering, fever, cough, malaise, swelling and lesions of gums, tongue, or lips, excessive tearing or "stickiness" of eyes and sores in the genital tract that lead to painful urination.
- Anaphylaxis
- Angioedema
- Generalized Exfoliative Dermatitis
