CELEBREX
Pfizer manufactures Celebrex. The Food and Drug Administration approved Celebrex for sale in the United States in December of 1998. Celebrex works by targeting the COX-2 enzyme, which plays a key role in arthritis pain and inflammation. Celebrex, and other COX-2–specific inhibitors such as Vioxx and Bextra, treat the pain, inflammation, and stiffness that accompanies osteoarthritis and adult rheumatoid arthritis. Celebrex was the first of these COX-2 inhibitor drugs to gain FDA approval.
Recently, the National Cancer Institute discontinued a study of Celebrex upon indications that patients receiving 400 milligrams of Celebrex were 2.5 times more likely to have a heart attack or stroke while patients receiving 800 milligrams of Celebrex a day were 3.4 times more likely to experience serious cardiovascular events.
Despite these indications, Pfizer has chosen not to pull Celebrex off the market. Instead, Pfizer has halted a number of marketing efforts while the FDA has advised physicians to prescribe Celebrex alternatives.
